She was born in Roswell on March 29, 1985. Gerina Michelle Mendoza was her birth name. Gerina Stevenson, the Mexican daughter of Rita Stevenson Stevenson and Alan Stevenson Stevenson, was born in Mexico. She has Mexican roots, yet is American as a national. Since she was a child she has had a strong desire to participate in sports. Gerina was a golfer when she was just the age of 15. Gerina was a student at Goddard High School for her secondary education. At the age of 16, she was a winner in New Mexico's state golf tournament. Along with volleyball, she competed on a state-level. She went to in the University of Texas in 2003. In her senior year she was a winner of every tournament she entered. During her undergraduate career she was awarded Conference USA individual champion player of the year and UTEP Female Athletics Player of the Year.
